The majority of the ground work that the San Juan River Foundation will focus on is in three major categories: Watershed Restoration and Protection, Stewardship and Stocking Programs and Education.  The Restoration and Protection will encompass studies and implementation of sediment containment and storm protection as well as river improvements.  The Stewardship and Stocking Projects will focus on management of the river's inhabitants, insect population and fish counts.  The Education Program will involve local and state businesses and agencies to improve the way businesses and industry understand their impact on the watershed.  This will also fund and sponsor schools and other organizations to continue the support of our sport and natural resources.

The Foundation will work with the New Mexico State Agencies in a collaborative effort to fund programs and apply for federal matching funds under the Sportfish Recreation Act.  This act allows foundations incorporated as a 501c3 to work in conjunction with state agencies and receive up to 3-1 matching federal funds.  This will position the foundation as a favorable resource to contribute to the San Juan River Watershed.
